NEOLITHIC-EBA EXCURSION number 2

STANTON DREW STONE CIRCLES,

BATHAMPTON DOWN MEGALITHS

AND LANHILL CHAMBERED BARROW

This reports two excursions, on both of which (25 September and 27 November) megaliths on Bathampton Down were visited. Once upon a time this must have been a great prehistoric site but being so close to the City of Bath it has been severely damaged.

On the first occasion the day began with a meeting at 10.30 at the Stanton Drew Stone Circles in the Chew Valley on the northern side of the Mendip Hills, Somerset. Present were Andy Burnham and Ruth, Neil Mortimer, Gerald Ponting, Kate Jordan, Sarah Seymour, Alistair, Pete G, Terence Meaden and US visitors Gaylan and Denise. It was a fine day at this stage, and only later did the weather turn unpleasant.
